type of defensive operation that concentrates on the destruction or defeat of the enemy through a decisive attack by the striking force
Good to know
In principle, there are two distinct methods of defensive operations: a) area defence; b) mobile defence.
Mobile defence is defined as a type of defensive operation that concentrates on the destruction or defeat of the enemy through a decisive attack by the striking force. Its purpose is to defeat the enemy’s advancing forces and prevent him from achieving his objectives through flexible and mobile manoeuvre. It is a method that combines positions and movement against the advancing enemy over an extended distance, with the emphasis being placed on attriting and canalizing the enemy. It uses a combination of ground holding forces around which mobile striking forces operate. It is an adversary focused method, permitting him to advance to a position that exposes him to counter-attack and envelopment. The emphasis is on defeating the enemy rather than retaining or retaking ground.
The mobile defense focuses on defeating or destroying enemy forces by allowing them to advance to a point where they are exposed to a decisive counterattack by a striking force.
