A defensive operation may create conditions for an offensive follow-on operation or may maintain the gains of previous offensive operations. Offensive operations may create prerequisites for follow-on stability operations or stability operations may be the consequence of offensive or defensive operations.
The main purpose of defensive operations is to oppose an enemy’s offensive actions and to deny the enemy his aim or objective. This could be by containing, destroying or attriting down portions of his forces, to hold and control ground or a combination of both. The mission will specify whether the main purpose is to defeat or disrupt the enemy (enemy focused) or to deny him access to specific areas (area focused).
In principle there are two distinct methods of defensive operations: a) area defence; b) mobile defence. Although the descriptions below convey the general pattern of each method of defensive operation with a clear focus and dominating approach, both methods include static and dynamic elements.
