Offensive activities include pre-emption to gain the initiative, disruption of an adversary’s offensive action, deception or diversion, seizing ground and fixing. In offensive activities, the attacker seeks to create the conditions for freedom of movement and manoeuvre; confuse the enemy’s understanding; break or reduce their cohesion and will, or defeat their forces selectively.
The purposes of offensive activities are: (a) Depriving the enemies of valuable resources, generally through raids and ambushes against their most important or useful resources; (b) Pre-empting the enemy, usually attacking their forces when and where they are not ready to fight, in order to gain the initiative and deny them the necessary time to prepare for combat; (c) Dislocating enemy forces through decisive engagement or deception, to render their strength irrelevant in key positions for the accomplishment of the mission; (d) Disrupting enemy defensive and possible offensive actions, through offensive activities aimed at paralyzing their forces, through attacks on C2 systems which may delay their ability to react quickly to the evolution of the tactical situation; (e) Seizure of vital ground and key terrain, in order to gain a position of advantage for subsequent operations, preventing their possible enemy exploitation.
