  • a set of microminiaturized, electronic circuits that are designed for use as processors and memory in computers and countless consumer and industrial products. Chips are the driving force in this industry. Small chips can hold from a handful to tens of thousands of transistors. They look like tiny chips of aluminum, no more than 1/16" square by 1/30" thick, which is where the term "chip" came from. Large chips, which can be more than a half inch square, hold millions of transistors. It is actually only the top one thousandth of an inch of a chip's surface that holds the circuits. The rest of it is just a base. The terms chip, integrated circuit and microchip are synonymous.

  • At a casino, rather than using actual cash to place bets at the gaming table, customers are required to use chips. These are small, coin-shaped tokens which come in a variety of designs and colours. Each chip has a specific monetary value.

  • ‘Token’ is another name given to a casino chip. These tokens are plastic discs similar to coins, with different colours to represent values and to distinguish players at the table. In casino gaming, cash is exchanged for chips at the ‘bank’ and these chips are used to play. These chips, or tokens, each have a cash value and can be turned back to currency at the end of the play session.
Good to know
  • The term ‘token’ is more often used to refer to slot machine chips, which are designed for slots play. While many UK slot machines take cash, a lot of the US casinos prefer to issue slot tokens in the same way table chips are used.
