According to Aristotle, recognition is, along with peripety, the most potent means of securing the tragic effect. Furthermore, it is most effective when closely allied to peripety. (Prince 1987) Recognition follows the tragic error of the hero (hamartia). The most famous example is Sophocles's "Oedipus Rex".
