Selle asutasid 1967 Stockholmis tööstusomandi kaitse Pariisi ning kirjandus- ja kunstiteoste kaitse Berni konventsiooniga (sõlmiti 9. IX 1886) ühinenud riigid. Aastast 1974 on WIPO ÜRO allasutus; keskus Genfis. Kõrgeim organ on peaassamblee.
Ratifitseerida Maailma Intellektuaalse Omandi Organisatsiooni autoriõiguse leping, mis on vastu võetud 1996. aasta 20. detsembril Genfis ning millele Eesti Vabariik on alla kirjutanud 1997. aasta 29. detsembril.

"Intellektuaalne omand" ja "intellektuaalomand" on täissünonüümid. Ühtlustati WIPO nimetus teiste rahvusvaheliste organisatsioonide nimetustega, nt Maailma Kaubandusorganisatsioon (WTO), Maailma Terviseorganisatsioon (WHO), jne.
For purposes of this Agreement 'Intellectual property` shall have the meaning found in Article 2 of the Convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, done at Stockholm, 14 July 1967.
