Seejuures loetakse nähtust tuulepuhanguks, kui tuule tippkiirus on võrreldes tuulekiiruse miinimumidega 4-5 m/s suurem. Puhangu kestus on tavaliselt alla 20 sekundi. Eriti tugevaid tuuleiile nimetatakse pagideks, mis kaasnevad rünksajupilvedega.

As forces such as turbulence and gusts act to displace the aircraft, the pilot reacts by providing opposing control forces to counteract this displacement.
The mean direction and the mean speed of the surface wind shall be measured, as well as significant variations of the wind direction and speed (gusts), and reported in degrees true and knots, respectively.
