In successive positions, the unit executes the delay along the entire depth of the assigned sector
Subunits delay continuously on and between each position: ground is never abandoned needlessly. The sequence is as follows: a. The approaching enemy is engaged at a distance, and as they advance, shorter-range weapons engage, and the volume of fire is increased. The purpose is to disorganize the enemy and force them to stop and deploy their force for an attack; b. Subunits avoid close combat. When the enemy threatens to close with or outflank the position, and the maximum delay has been achieved, troops withdraw to the next position.
Units delaying using subsequent positions when the assigned area is so wide that available forces cannot occupy more than a single tier of positions. In a delay using subsequent bounds, all delaying units are committed to each of the series of BPs or across the assigned area on the same PL. Most of the delaying force is located well forward. The mission dictates the delay from one BP or PL to the next. Units stagger the movement of delaying elements so that elements are not moving at the same time.
