Üldjuhul mõeldakse soomusüksuste all tankiüksusi, soomustatud luureelemente ja rasketel jalaväe lahingumasinatel liikuvat jalaväge. Kui kergemaid platvorme kasutavas üksuses on ülekaalus tankid, loetakse üksus soomusüksuseks. Üksust, kus on ülekaalus tankid, võidakse inglise keeles nimetada ka „heavy armoured force“.
