Läänemerd nimetatakse teistes keeltes (tõlgituna) kas Balti mereks (inglise, poola, prantsuse, vene) või idamereks (rootsi, saksa, soome, taani). Eestikeelne Läänemeri on trükitud allikais esmakordselt mainitud 1854. a, varem on esinenud nimed Hommikumeri (saksa Ostsee tõlge, 1821), Rootsi meri (1840. aastad) ja Eesti meri (ilmselt Ostsee ekslik tõlge, 1811).
