Maa põhjaosa: 1884 Saksa Uus-Guinea asumaa osa, 1914 Uus-Guinea ala Austraalia halduses. 1949 ühendati mõlemad maaosad ühtse juhtimise alla Paapua ja Uus-Guinea alana. Sõltumatu aastast 1975.
