Dokumendiga ATP 3.2.1 on loobutud terminist "combat functions", selle asemel kõneldakse ka taktikatasandil terminist "joint functions". Kuna eesti keeles on "lahingufunktsioon" väga juurdunud, soovitab töörühm kasutada eesti keeles vastena terminit "lahingufunktsioon".

Joint functions provide a sound framework of related capabilities and activities grouped together to assist commanders to integrate, synchronize, and direct various capabilities and activities in joint operations. Using joint functions, commanders can determine force requirements. Common to joint operations at all levels are the functions; manoeuvre, fires, command and control, intelligence, information, sustainment, force protection and civil-military cooperation (CIMIC).
