Today the term „Renaissance” means Italian art and architecture which from 1420 until the middle of the sixteenth century was founded upon the restoration of the ancient Roman standards and motifs. It has its basis in the sense of stability and poise found in classical art. The Renaissance, which is the French for „rebirth”, revolutionised attitudes towards philosophy, literature, politics, science, art and architecture.
