    • For ferrous alloys heat treatment consisting of austenitizing to a high temperature followed by cooling sufficiently rapidly to avoid new precipitations on return to ambient temperature, e.g. applied to austenitic stainless steels and maraging steels. (see: heat treatment, austenitizing, cooling, austenitic stainless steel, maraging steel).
    • For heat treatable aluminium alloys heating to a suitable temperature for a sufficient time to allow to enter constituents into solid solution, where they are retained in supersaturated state after quenching.
