An assigned fire support relationship may be one of the following: direct support (DS), reinforcing (R), general support reinforcing (GSR) or general support (GS). Non standard FS relationships are developed when none of these standards ones sufficiently addresses FS requirements and/or responsibilities. It describes in detail the support responsibilities of a FS unit. The task also clearly defines the relationship of the FS unit with a manoeuvre unit or another FS unit. It does not affect the organizational structure or the command relationships that results from that structure.
Fire support relationships may be long-term, frequently repeated, or a one-time occurrence.
Field artillery missions describe the fire support responsibilities of a [field artillery] unit in detail and establish the fire support relationship with the brigade. The fire support relationship does not affect the organizational structure and the command relationships.
