As a planned operation, a link-up is conducted in enemy-controlled territory.
The purpose of the link-up is to join two or more forces in contested territory. It may involve different types of forces. A typical example is a link-up between ground forces and forces deployed by air manoeuvre in which the former relieves the latter in place. It may therefore be necessary to destroy the enemy between these forces before a link-up can be established. Both forces may be moving towards one another, or one may be stationary or encircled. They may have the same or differing missions.
