The purpose of defence may be to deter or defeat an enemy force by holding ground. Defence is to be understood as a ground holding activity. Generally, it will require a combination of static elements that denying the enemy freedom of manoeuvre, and dynamic elements for countermoves. The balance between these two elements depends upon the mission, the relative capabilities of the attacker and defender, and in accordance with the terrain.
