The Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water 2 (VSMOW2) is the purest distilled water, with an isotopic composition adjusted to be as close as possible to the average level of Earth's ocean water. As the original stocks of pure VSMOW2 were depleted, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) created a direct successor that is isotopically identical to its predecessor.
