Unfortunately, the processes that generate turbulence in protoplanetary disks are not well understood, and mixing/stirring is generally treated in a simple parameterized manner. One way to approach this problem is to search for observational signs of dust settling in disks.
We conclude that besides grain growth in the disk of the Butterfly Star, we find evidence for vertical settling and radial segregation of the dust in this disk.
