area around the nominal operational path of a satellite, within which the satellite is steered
Good to know
'Orbital tube: A stringent orbit control is required to the Sentinel-1 system. Satellites’ position along the orbit needs to be very accurate, in terms of both accuracy and knowledge, together with pointing and timing/synchronization between interferometric pairs. Orbit positioning control for Sentinel-1 is defined by way of an orbital Earth fixed “tube” 50 m (rms) wide in radius around a nominal operational path (Figure 14). The satellite is kept inside such a tube for most of its operational lifetime' Earth Observation Portal > Directory > Satellite Missions > C > Copernicus: Sentinel-1 , https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions/c-missions/copernicus-sentinel-1 [21.12.2016]
The orbit for Earth observation satellite SAR missions is maintained within an Earth-fixed orbital tube to ensure ground-track coverage repeatability, and consequently, enable repeat-pass interferometric compatibility between data takes.
