Eestis on doktorikraadi nimetus enamikul erialadel filosoofiadoktor (ladinakeelne lühend dr. phil.). PhD on ingliskeelne lühend ühendist Doctor of Philosophy ’filosoofiadoktor’. Eestikeelset lühendit dr kasutatakse ka eri valdkondade doktorikraadide lühendites, nt filos-dr (filosoofiadoktor), vet-dr (veterinaariadoktor), õigustead dr (õigusteaduse doktor). Tsitaatlühendit dr. kasutatakse mitmesuguste doktorikraadide ladinakeelsetes lühendites, nt dr. phil., dr. philos. (doctor philosophiae 'filosoofiadoktor'), dr. med. vet.
