Tuleb teha vahet koordinaatide viite- ehk referentssüsteemil ühelt poolt ja kasutataval koordinaatsüsteemi tüübil teiselt poolt.
MGRS (Military Grid Reference System ehk sõjaväe koordinaatide viitesüsteem) on UTM-süsteemi laiendus ja koosneb võrguala tähistajast, 100 000-ruutmeetrise ala identifikaatorist ja numbrilisest asukohast.
