Juhul, kui kasutaja on aluskaardi kujundust muutnud ja lõpptulemus näeb välja oluliselt erinev Maa- ja Ruumiameti pakutavast, on sobivam viidata aluskaardi päritolu asemel aluseks olevate ruumiandmete päritolule.

A foundational layer on a map that is the basis of GIS visual and geographic context. A basemap may include background reference information such as landforms, roads, landmarks, and administrative boundaries. It displays below any other layers and is typically excluded from the legend. A basemap is used for locational or spatial data reference.
A conventional map serves as a reference map to guide through the distortion of a cartogram with a more common image of the world, although in many cases a population cartogram (see related maps above) is the more natural basemap since is helps us understand how other topics are different from the population distribution (rather than distribution of land).
