a component of drama (an object, a character, a twist of fate, a feeling, etc) set in opposition to the achievement of an objective, thereby creating conflict. [...] External obstacle: an obstacle which has no relation whatsoever with the character whose objective it opposes. External, with internal origin: an obstacle which is external to a character but for which he is responsible. Internal: part of character's nature (usually psychological) that forms a source of obstacles in his pursuit of an objective. (Lavandier, 2005) Obstacles occur throughout the entire script but are thought of as the building blocks of the second act.
