Domain screenwriting
  • in the screenplay the scene headings provide a wide variety of information about a following scene: interior (INT.) or exterior (EXT.), location, time of day. They are always typed in capital letters. (Riley, 2005, p. 7) Generally, there is an em dash (—) between the location and DAY or NIGHT. (Dancyger & Rush, 2013, p. 285) Example: EXT. ARIZONA DESERT – DAY. [This means that the following scene takes place] outside, EXT., somewhere in the ARIZONA DESERT; the time is DAY. (Field, 1984, p. 221) If either place or time changes, it becomes a new scene [and generally requires a new scene heading]. (Field, 1984, p. 163) Also called slug line.
