mentorSõna lähtub vanakreeka eepose „Odüsseia” kangelase Mentori nimest (kreeka mentōr 'mõtleja'), kelle kuju võtnud jumalanna Athena abistas Odysseuse poega Telemachost isa otsinguil. Üldnimeks muutus mentor prantsuse keeles Féneloni (1651–1715) romaani „Telemachose seiklused” (1699) mõjul.
