  • [a type of transition indicating] instantaneous shift from one shot to the next. Is the most common transition. (Riley, 2005, p. 80) Term placed in caps at right of page, double spaced before and after, to emphasise the edit between the end of one scene and the beginning of the next. (Costello, 2004) When no transition is indicated, a cut is assumed. An entire script can actually be written without any transitions being indicated at all and the reader will assume that every transition is a cut. [However,] a CUT TO: added at the end of a sequence [or an act] can give a heightened sense of finality, a more distinct sense that one thing has ended and a new thin has begun. (Riley, 2005, p.81)
