  • a question which a rises in the audience's mind at the inciting incident: what will be the outcome of the action? This question may undergo changes as the script progresses, usually rising to higher levels of significance. (Burgoyne & Downey, 2012)

  • the question that arises in the audience’s mind as they are introduced to a protagonist within a set of given circumstances that propel the character into some kind of action (e.g. “Will he/she find someone to love?”, “Will he/she survive the plane crash?” “Will he/she escape from the concentration camp?”) (Austin Community College, 2014)
  • the dramatic question - will the protagonist achieve his objective? - is lodged in the spectator's mind at the end of the first act. It gives rise to suspense (in the broad sense of the term). (Lavandier, 2005)
