The White-chested White-eye was endemic to Norfolk Island, Australia, where it once occupied the island's subtropical forests. It declined rapidly through the mid-1900s, driven primarily by predation from introduced rats and habitat loss. The last multi-observer records were in 1979, and despite extensive survey effort since, the species is now listed as Extinct.
