  • one in which commodities are bought and sold, esp. food and raw materials forming part of international trade, such as wheat and wool. Buying and selling is by brokers representing users and producers. Goods are usually classified according to agreed standards of quality and variety so that dealing can take place without the commodity being seen. Some commodities are sold in public auction, but most are exchanged as actuals or futures.
