steroidide hulka kuuluv küllastumatu alkohol, värvusetu kristalne aine
any of the natural products derived from the steroid nucleus; all are waxy, colorless solids soluble in most organic solvents but not in water, and contain one alcohol functional group
nom générique d'alcools cycliques très répandus dans les règnes animal et végétal où ils jouent un rôle important (ex : cholestérol, ergostérol)
Sterols exist either as free sterols or as esters of fatty acids. Animal sterols (zoosterols) include cholesterol and lanosterol. The major plant sterol (phytosterol) is beta-sitosterol, while fungal sterols (mycosterols) include ergosterol.
The well-known sterol cholesterol is found only in foods of animal origin—meat, egg yolk, fish, poultry, and dairy products. Organ meats (e.g., liver, kidney) and egg yolks have the most cholesterol, while muscle meats and cheeses have less.
