Officers may use the restraint chair when a prisoner presents a threat to themselves, to an officer, or to the general safety and security of the police department. An on duty sergeant or lieutenant must approve the use of the restraint chair and (if possible) be present when a prisoner is placed into the chair. The restraint chair should only be used as a control measure. The restraint chair will not be used as a form of punishment.
