When designing traffi c management schemes in which provision is made for vehicles to travel outside the normal limits of the carriageway and/or hard shoulder (for example, if a part of the verge is hardened for a short distance in order to accommodate the necessary traffi c lanes on that part of the highway), there should be a clearance of at least 0.6 m between the edge of the traffi cked lane and the nearest part of any permanent traffi c sign.
