  • 1. When a colony becomes overcrowded, the old queen stops laying eggs. The workers build cells for new queens, and about four days later cover the cells with wax. A few days after the new queen cells are covered over with wax, many of the workers and the old queen leave the hive as a "swarm". Their flight to form a new colony is called "swarming". Some workers stay behind in the hive in order to care for the larvae and the new queen.
