  • a pale‐yellow crystalline substance, useful as a sensitive chromogenic reagent for the detection and quantification of compounds containing free amino or imino groups. The common amino acids (and the free amino groups of peptides and proteins, and various other amino compounds) give a red, violet, or blue coloration, the shade depending somewhat on conditions, whereas the imino acids proline and hydroxyproline give a yellow colour.
