Services such as information systems, data banks (e.g. molecular register) will be provided in support to relevant EU policies.
The ENGL molecular register, outcome of a collaboration with CNR, Italy and RKI, Germany is an information system aimed at (i) storing molecular information on Genetically Modified Organisms and providing restricted access to it, (ii) allow further analysis to be performed based on a suite of bioinformatics tools and local access to selected publicly available databases.
It all started in July 2000, when the European Network of GMO laboratories was set-up and during the first plenary meeting it identified, as one of its highest priority, the development of a molecular register to contain all the molecular details of the EU-approved genetically modified organisms and the necessary on-line tools to analyse those sequences. It then led in early 2001 to the launch of the development for a planned completion at the end of 2002.
