Campbell County is centered around the mineral extraction industry. Coal and coal bed methane gas have played important roles in the County's economy, as well as the economy of the State of Wyoming. In 1997, Campbell County coal mines produced around 88 percent of Wyoming's overall coal production. With 600 coal bed wells drilled y 1998, Campbell County produces 95 percent of the State's coal bed methane gas.
