Kui sama kindlustus või sama varaga seotud kindlustusriskide kindlustus jagatakse mitme kindlustusandja vahel määratud osades (kaaskindlustus), on iga kindlustusandja kohustatud maksma hüvitist üksnes võrdeliselt tema osaga.
Kaaskindlustust võidakse kasutada eelkõige siis, kui üks kindlustusandja ei soovi kindlustusvõtja poolt pakutavat riski tervikuna üle võtta.
