Domain food chemicals
  • a bulk sweetener, about half as sweet as sucrose, consisting of a mixture of two disaccharides, glucosyl-glucitol and glucosyl-mannitol
  • a mixture of hydrogenated mono- and disaccharides whose principal components are the disaccharides
Good to know
  • It is thought to be less laxative than sorbitol or mannitol, and does not encourage tooth decay, so is used in tooth-friendly sweets. It absorbs little water, so products are less sticky than those made with sucrose and have a longer shelf-life.

Usage examples
  • Polüoolid on kasulikud hambakaariese tõrjeks, seetõttu kuuluvad nad närimiskummide koostisesse. Tuntumad polüoolid on mannitool, sorbitool, isomalt, ksülitool, maltitool, laktitool.
  • Isomalti (E 953) toodetakse tavalisest suhkrust.
