Domain chemical methods
inert carrier gas
Usage examples
  • In GC, a heated inert carrier gas such as helium, hydrogen, or nitrogen flows over a solid phase that compounds within the gas flow will interact with to various degrees. The more a compound interacts with the stationary phase, the longer it will stay in the column. This is an example of selective partitioning, which is the basis of all chromatographic separations.
