  • Eristatakse kristalset ja teralist härmatist. Kristalne härmatis on tihti kohev, pitsitaoline ja pudeneb kergesti maha, kusjuures näha on jääkristalle. ... Teralise härmatise puhul kristalle näha pole, vaid sellel on näivalt amorfne ehitus. Teralise härmatise pind on lähemalt vaadates mügarlik ja ebatasane. See tekib uduse ilmaga, sealjuures võib üpris tuuline ning temperatuur vaid veidi alla nulli olla.

  • Väikeste tilkade jäätumine madalal temperatuuril (alla –3 °C) toimub kiiremini kui jäite moodustumise ajal, mistõttu piisad ei jõua laiali valguda. Tekib teraline härmatis ehk jäitehärm. Kõige tõenäolisemalt tekib härmatis –3 kuni –8 °C temperatuuril. Veeauru sublimatsiooni ja väga väikeste piiskade külmumise tagajärjel moodustub kristalliline härmatis. Tihedamini tekib see suure suhtelise niiskuse ja vaikse ilmaga –10 kuni –20 °C õhutemperatuuril.
