  • a horizontal band of tissue located between the ends (epiphyses) of a long bone and the growing zone (metaphysis) of the shaft. It is composed of cartilaginous, bony, and fibrous components that combine to allow for longitudinal and latitudinal growth and remodelling of the developing bone (endochondral ossification).

  • Laste luumurdude puhul on u 25% juhtudest haaratud kasvuplaat, u 5–10% juhtudest võib sellega kaasneda kasvuhäire (oht on suurem, kui haaratud reieluu distaalne osa, sääreluu proksimaalne osa jne). Väga oluline on kasvuplaati haarava murru täpne paigaldamine, ennetamaks kasvuprobleeme. Sõltuvalt kasvuplaadi erinevast haaratusest viis murrutüüpi Salter-Harrise klassifikatsiooni järgi.
  • 1963.a. kirjeldasid Robert B. Salter ja W. Robert Harris 5 tüüpi kasvuplaadiga seotud luumurdu. Hiljem on lisandunud veel 4 harva esinevat tüüpi – kokku 9.

  • The growth plate, also known as the epiphyseal plate or physis, is the area of growing tissue near the end of the long bones in children and adolescents. Each long bone has at least two growth plates: one at each end. The growth plate determines the future length and shape of the mature bone. When growth is complete--sometime during adolescence--the growth plates close and are replaced by solid bone.
  • Growth plate injuries are very common in children, making up 15 to 30% of all childhood bony injuries.
