Domain pharmaceutical productsfood processing, food preservation & chemical treatmentchemical technology
  • protsess, mille käigus aurustatakse külmutatud materjalist jää, ilma et vahepeal moodustuks vesi
  • a method of drying foodstuffs, blood plasma, pharmaceuticals, etc. while retaining their physical structure, the material being frozen and then warmed in a high vacuum so that the ice sublimes
  • a process in which water is removed from a product after it is frozen and placed under a vacuum, allowing the ice to change directly from solid to vapor without passing through a liquid phase
Good to know
  • The process consists of three separate, unique, and interdependent processes; freezing, primary drying (sublimation), and secondary drying (desorption).
  • The material is frozen, placed under a high vacuum, and maintained at a low temperature (−40°C or below). The pressure generated by the vacuum causes the ice to turn from a solid to a gaseous form without passing through a liquid state. This allows the removal of water from the material without otherwise disturbing its composition. Freeze drying is used to preserve tissues (e.g. blood plasma) and foods and to concentrate solutions.
