Põhiekspordi kasvutempo aasta lõpus langes, kuid ekspordi maht jäi 1997. a lõpu tasemele. Ühtaegu muutus märkimisväärselt põhiekspordi struktuur - pooleni aasta alguse tasemest kahanenud idasuunalisi (toidukaupade) ekspordivooge kompenseeris Eestis töödeldud masinate ja seadmete väljavedu Soome ja Rootsi, millele oli loodud tugev baas varasemate aastate otseinvesteeringutega.
