  • a pigment of organic, natural and animal origin. It is a pigment used since antiquity and used by Greeks in the classical period. It is obtained by calcinating fragments of ivory in absence of air and in this respect can be seen as a special example of animal black. In the 17th century preparation was by heating ivory for around 15 minutes in a crucible with salt. It has a fine aspect, opaque and transparent at the same time. Its transparency makes it particularly suitable for glazing in oil techniques. It can be used with fresco, tempera, encaustic and oil.
