The colorforming reaction is conferred on the paper by the basic chemical molecule, in a reaction where, the application of heat or pressure opens up the ring in the basic molecule. This leaves a residual positive charge which is delocalised around the ring system. The energy required to allow this delocalisation is absorbed from incident visible radiation giving the compound its black colour.
