dark ground illumination - a method for the microscopic examination of living material, eg microorganisms, tissue culture cells, by scattered light. A special condenser with a circular stop illuminates the specimen with a numerical aperture larger than that collected by the objective. Only the scattered rays pass through the objective to reach the eye and the specimen appears luminous against a dark background.
