  • countervailing duty - a special duty, over and above ordinary duties, imposed by an importing country to offset government subsidies in an exporting country when subsidized imports cause or threaten to cause material injury to a domestic industry producing the like product in the importing country

Usage examples
  • 1. In response to unfair pricing practices as described in Article 1 which cause major injury, a redressive duty may be applied by the Community.
  • 2. The measures required shall be adopted in accordance with the procedure laid down in Regulation (EEC) No 1035/72 with regard to the application of countervailing duties on fruit and vegetables.
