1990ndate keskel võeti tippteaduse ja –tehnika jaoks mõeldud hajusarvutuste infrastruktuuri täpsemaks kirjeldamiseks kasutusele väljend “grid computing” mida võiks eesti keelde tõlkida kui “andmete võretöötlus”. Võretöötluse aluseks on ressursside kooskõlastatud jagamine ning probleemide lahendamine dünaamilistes virtuaalorganisatsioonides (ingl. virtual organization). Jagamise all ei ole mõeldud ainult failide vahetamist, vaid pigem ligipääsu riistvara-, tarkvara- ja andmeressurssidele.
Research will focus on new computational models, including computing and information GRIDs, peer-to-peer technologies and the associated middleware tomake use of large scale highly distributed computing and storage resources and to develop scalable, dependable and secure platforms. It will include novel collaborative tools and programming methods supporting interoperability of applications and new generations of simulation, visualisation and datamining tools.
