  • clad(ding) - the outer jacket or thin layer, usually of metal, which covers nuclear fuel elements to prevent corrosion of the fuel and the release of fission products into the coolant. Aluminium or its alloys, magnesium alloys, stainless steel and zirconium alloys are common cladding materials.
